“She’s good,” I said. I moved back a few inches to give Ashley some room to walk. She gave me no indication that she would fall over and collapse again.

“Like she said, okay. I don’t need you guys hovering over me,” Ashley chimed in.

Ashley didn’t want to get an argument about the kindness of her friends looking out for her, but I could tell she was feeling smothered.

That’s when I took a stand. “We should focus on how to get out of this place now. Agreed?”

Curtis nodded. “That’s all I’ve ever been saying.”

It was only then that I wondered, maybe that will never be possible. I mean who knows whatever was in that cave could have been like us, trying to escape. And with that, I thought, maybe I may never see Shoba ever again. As my thoughts started getting heavier and heavier, I took a deep breath and just simply tried to relax. What we all needed to focus on right now is what we can do at the moment.

“So what’s the plan?”Ashley asked.

I shrugged. “There’s got to be something in here that we can use, something has to be a clue. So, here’s what I’m thinking, why don’t we split off and look around the chamber and if one of us finds something we’ll let each other know.”

“Sounds good enough to me,” Ashley said.

It wasn’t just the standing around that I found annoying, it was the hopelessness that wore on me. Nubara’s chamber had too much to look at. Way too much. On the upper part of the walls, the curved outermost part had a dull sheen. You could tell these were used in battles fought eons ago. I adjusted my view to the bookcase lined up against the wall. Hundreds of books centuries old, and weighing a ton were stacked with their spines forward and begging to be grabbed.

I let my curiosity lead me as I felt my fingers along the edge of the book and felt the aged indention of the letters on the title. After I pulled my hand away, dust collected on my fingertips. I squinted my eyes and read the title.

“The History of Forgotten Kings…” I read. Wanting to know more, I grasped the book and staggered back a few steps. I tried to balance myself under its weight and once I got my footing, I immediately rifled through the pages. I turned, hacking a cough and feeling the dust tickle my nose. The page I landed on had a picture of two people standing together wearing a white cloth draped around their bodies. I frowned not sure how any of this information could help me at all. At first without really noticing, I saw something in the picture out of the corner of my eye. An Emblem, like the one on the necklace I had given to Esabelle, it was cleverly hidden behind the figures on the page.

“It’s there too!”

What was the meaning of the symbol? I’ve been seeing it everywhere. Ever since the Arctic, staring at the same symbol on the necklace and now on this page.
